Round 2: Help Me Choose A Book Cover

Thanks for all your feedback on the book covers. The first poll was nearly tied, so it didn’t really help us choose, but we got a lot of constructive criticism which made us rethink our designs. The title is now more readable on the first cover. The pink has been replaced with orange in the second cover, because as you know, I’m not a big fan of pink. The third design is brand new.

We know these icons are small, but we showed them this way, because this is most likely how they will appear on sites like Amazon, iTunes and Smashwords. What is the book about? Love, passion, infidelity, heartache…in short, the things that keep life exciting. The book will be published later this summer; you’ll be able to read sample pages here so you can get an idea of my non-Pet-Society writing style. 😉 For now, we’d love it if you can tell us which cover you like best. Muchos gracias!

the third one is too anime-ish for me, unless you are aiming for that kind of idea? i think the last cover gives impression that its not very serious to me. (although i am an anime/manga fan), if i were NOT, id think it was a little book for teen, pre-teens rather than people who are older generation…(above 20)?

the first cover is definitely the one i see as intelligent and sophisticated.

I like 3. The icons on the first two have been used by so many management and psychology books, they are a bit stale. #2 is obviously playing with that meme, but it could be self-help, feminism, not necessarily fiction. #3 is graphically more interesting; it could be the better sort of graphic novel. Good use of light/dark/curves in the design, and the young woman has an intense quality that could go in any direction. Does that echo what we will find in the book?? So exciting for you!

    I like number 2 because it’s a little wacky 🙂

i agree with dani, though. it DOES give it too much of a textbook feel than just sophisticated. maybe a photographic cover would work better? a girl who is standing in the middle into the camera (her whole body), hands holding with two guys on either side(their back is facing the camera). and maybe add another guy, whos standing behind her, but hes also facing the other side of the camera? the girl can have a (:o) look hahaha. idk if i explained it well enough :p

if you want, im definitely down to do the photoshoot! if you click on the website link you can see a few of my works 🙂

or a girl whos putting make up on, with picture framed photographs of FEW men on her dresser :p

thats kind of cool. but not exactly what i was talking abt haha

Haha! Too funny! Kiko, your portfolio is really cool! I wish I could take great pictures like that. Thank you so much for offering to work on the cover, but I think we will stick to simple text and vector artwork for now. The other writer, Dave, and I want to make a decision soon, rather than go back to the drawing board.

    I can’t see the images D:!

I think the font makes the cover look cheep. I worked in a library for a while and there were a few books that just had bad covers so we never put them on display. I think the last one would be fine so long as you changed the font.

I voted for three although I agree with Charlie that the font is not the best. It looks very academic to me (an academic).

Great title! For me it’s between 1 and 2. The upside down figure adds an intriguing twist – so I chose 2.

I think number one is the most mature looking, however, number 3 has great colors and shading. I think number one should be a little more complicated of a gradient, or maybe a nice border would make it look more finished. Number three I agree has a more childish feel to it, but maybe if it had more earthy colors it would seem more mature.

    The third is awesome 😀

    3 is so nice 🙂

From what I gather it’s a collection of short-stories you are publishing? Well, fictional work anyway. The first two covers look like academic text books to me. If I saw them I would assume they were for a course in say psychology or sociology maybe.

    • 18 Pet Society Anonymous July 6, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Hey Guys, thanks for all the comments! Greena, yes, this is a set of short stories. I have heard from several others that the first two look more academic or non-fiction. That is why we came up with the third design.

as it does to change the color of my hair in the pet society? already bought the paint, but do not know how to put on hair!

I know, is a question totally off the subject

i really think that the 3rd one makes it seem like such a female teen book. If that is who it is aimed at then sure its great but if you want it to be about the interesting bits of life then i think a photo cover definatly!
    good luck with it
